Neah Bay 2018
TL AND CO. GOES TO NEAH BAY!!
For several years now my friends and I have fished opening day for Halibut, in Neah Bay. Its almost always guaranteed limits of fish and has always been an excellent guys trip. This year I was able to talk the family into coming along and making it a long weekend. I feel like NB is one of this paces you just have to go in your lifetime.
This was our first camping trip of the year since we decided not to go to Long Beach, as there was no razor clam digs scheduled during the Kid’s spring break. (still bummed about that one!) It’s a pretty long drive, and when towing a camp trailer it is definitely cheaper to drive around the Puget Sound and onto the Olympic Peninsula. Who doesn’t want to show their kids videos of the old Tacoma Narrows Bridge, right before driving over it???
We stayed at the Hobuck Beach Resort, which is an amazing setting and well located for easy access all that Neah Bay has to offer. Upon arriving, we went the beach ASAP! Here’s a video I put together of our Campsite and some playing on the Beach!
The first morning we woke up bright and early so we could to the Cape Flattery hike before the crowds got wild, and boy were we glad we did! I have to say Neah Bay has always been short on good food, well not this year! There’s a new place in town called Calvin’s Crab Shack, and well it’s just that, a shack, however they have great coffee, and all kinds of local, fresh caught seafood on the menu. The views along the hike are unreal, and it takes you to the Northwesternmost point in the contiguous United States. One of our favorite parts of the hike is the section where you are walking along a “boardwalk” made by hand with Cedar most likely cut from the area. These kids are REALLY fast walkers!
It was a great time visiting all the sighst and playing at the beach as much as possible, the main goal when we go camping is to relax, and spend quality time together away from all the distractions. I am so incredibly grateful to have a business that allows me to spend so much time with family and still provide the best possible service to our clients.
Once we got all the playing out of the way it was time for the real work to begin. There’s an empty spot in the freezer labeled “halibut” and it’s EMPTY! Time for a MEAT RUN! This year we fished on a charter boat, with a few other guys and we came back with all our fish, while that’s always the expectation, its never a guarantee! Here’s a short video of some sorting and counting of the fish we kept. The flat fish are Halibut, and the ugly smaller ones are Ling Cod.
